How to Clean Your Yoga Mat (By Material Type)

Regular cleaning extends your mat's life and keeps it hygienic. But different materials need different care — here's exactly what to do for each type.

PVC Mats (Manduka PRO, Gaiam)

Cleaning method: Mix 1 cup water + 2 drops dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray lightly, wipe with microfiber cloth. Air dry flat or rolled loosely. For deep cleaning, mix 1:4 white vinegar to water.

Frequency: Wipe after each use. Deep clean weekly with regular practice.

Do NOT: Use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers. Closed-cell PVC is bacteria-resistant — you don't need antibacterial cleaners.

Natural Rubber Mats (Jade Harmony)

Cleaning method: Mix 1 cup water + 1 tbsp mild soap (Castile soap recommended). Spray lightly, wipe gently with soft cloth. Never soak the mat. Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.

Frequency: Wipe after every use (rubber absorbs sweat). Deep clean every 2 weeks.

Do NOT: Use vinegar or citrus-based cleaners (they degrade natural rubber), machine wash, or leave in direct sunlight. Heat and UV break down natural rubber.

PU + Rubber Mats (Liforme, Lululemon, Alo)

Cleaning method: Liforme sells a dedicated mat cleaner ($12), but DIY works: 1 cup water + 1 tsp witch hazel + 2 drops tea tree oil. Spray and wipe. The PU top layer is delicate — use only soft microfiber cloths.

Frequency: Wipe after EVERY use. These mats absorb sweat into the PU layer — bacteria buildup happens fast if not cleaned. Deep clean weekly.

Do NOT: Use vinegar, alcohol, bleach, or any solvent-based cleaners. They will strip the PU top layer and destroy the mat's grip.

Universal Mat Care Tips

  • Roll loosely, not tight — tight rolling creates permanent creases and edge curling
  • Store flat or loosely rolled — never folded, never under heavy objects
  • Avoid direct sunlight — UV degrades all mat materials over time
  • No shoes on the mat — shoes track dirt and grit that abrade the surface
  • Replace when: grip deteriorates, surface cracks/flakes, edges won't lie flat, persistent odor after cleaning
